Queen Letizia undertook the only engagement scheduled for this week. She attended the opening of the exhibition ‘Goya Drawings — Only the will is left over’ at the Prado National Museum.
The exhibition is showing the work of Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes in chronological order. The artwork includes his drawings, Italian Notebooks and Bordeaux Albums.
Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career were a commentator and chronicler of his era.
Upon, arrival, Queen Letizia toured the Museum and held a brief meeting with the Royal Board of the Prado National Museum and with the curators of the exhibition José Manuel Matilla and Manuela Mena.
This exhibition is the result of the work carried out to prepare a new chronological catalogue of Goya’s drawings through a collaboration agreement signed in 2014 by the Botín Foundation and the Prado Museum.
Since the 1973 Gassier catalogue was published, the number of drawings has undergone modifications and there has been a need to develop a new reasoned catalogue in which the huge collection of his work from more than two centuries ago can be updated.
The exhibition brings together more than a hundred of Goya’s drawings, coming from the Prado’s own collections and from public and private collections around the world.
In addition, it provides a modern vision of the ideas that the artist approached on a recurring basis during his life, and that highlights the survival and relevance of his thinking.

Today, the Duchess of Cambridge had a very whirlwind and busy day. She was visiting the Ark Open Farm near Belfast, as part of her tour of the UK to promote her landmark survey on the early years, ‘5 Big Questions on the Under-Fives’ before heading to Aberdeen in Scotland to visit the Social Bite café. Both the engagements were embargoed due to security reasons.
The visit came after the launch of her landmark survey that is part of her life long project ‘Early Years Intervention’. She launched the survey last month in Birmingham. Then Catherine visited Cardiff and Woking to promote the survey and undertook an engagement in London too and heard from people across communities about their thoughts on how experiences in the early years can impact upon later life.
Conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of The Royal Foundation, the survey contains five short questions and aims to spark a national conversation on the early years that will ultimately help bring about positive, lasting change for generations to come. So far, 2,00,000 people have taken part in the survey.
Duchess of Cambridge, who is styled as Baroness Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, was welcomed in the Irish city Belfast by the Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster who shared her excite via Twitter, “Delighted to welcome the Duchess of Cambridge to Belfast earlier.….lots of excited children….and adults”.
About the survey Palace said,
“It follows eight years of work by the Duchess of Cambridge, during which she has explored how experiences in early childhood often lie at the root of the hardest social challenges the country faces today. Catherine has spent time meeting with families across the country and hearing about the issues they deal with day-to-day, as well as speaking to academics, experts, organisations and practitioners. In May 2018, the Duchess convened a steering group of experts to focus on how to bring about positive, lasting change in this area.
The survey is designed to bring together the thoughts of as many people as possible — recognising that everyone has a role in ensuring strong, healthy foundations for the youngest in our society that will positively affect their lifelong outcomes. The findings should provide a vital source of information for the early years sector, helping it to better understand public perceptions of the importance of the early years, and the first-hand experiences of parents, families and carers. This public feedback will also help to focus Her Royal Highness’ work through The Royal Foundation as she endeavours to provide children across the UK with the best foundations to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.”
During her visit to theArk Open farm, the Duchess of Cambridge spoke to local parents and grandparents about the themes covered in her survey, which closes on 21st February.
The Duchess heard their thoughts on the most important factors that ensure children become happy adults and the role of parents and society in ensuring children have the best possible start in life.
As expected, the Mother of three adorable kids, Catherine was more than happy to spend the time with kids. Talking to kids she said, “Charlotte and George will be very sad not to have met you and see this really cool farm”.
The Ark Open Farm opened in 1990 as one of the first open farms in Northern Ireland. Having initially specialised in rare breeds of farm animals, the farm has now developed a number of play areas and activities for children. At present, the farm is set on 40 acres of countryside and is home to a variety of animals, including alpacas and lambs.
Getting kids outside to play and spend time had been the centre point of Catherine’s ‘Back to Nature’ Garden in 2019.
Open farms such as this are important in providing places in the community for family members of all generations to spend quality time together while allowing children to benefit from spending time outdoors. Talking to The Belfast Telegraph the Owner Stewart Donaldson said,
He was delighted to welcome the Duchess of Cambridge to Ark Open Farm in what is a very special year for the family-run farm.
“It’s our 30th anniversary. We’re all very excited. It was quite a job keeping her visit secret. We had only 10 days notice,” he explained. “We have a plaque which Kate will unveil to mark our 30th anniversary”.
At the farm, Duchess met a very special member of the farm — Sophie the corn snake. Laughing with the children Catherine said, “This is the first time I ever held a snake-like this, how cool is that?”
Before leaving, Catherine thanked the local families for participating in the survey and said, “It’s really interesting to get everyone’s perspectives”.
A video of the visit.
The second stop of the day was Social Bite Café in Aberdeen, Scotland. Catherine is styled as Countess of Strathearn in Scotland. Social Bite runs social enterprise cafés throughout Scotland and uses their platform to distribute 100,000 items of food and hot drinks to homeless people each year, as well as employing staff who have experienced homelessness themselves.
At the Café, Duchess met employees, supported volunteers and customers who have experienced homelessness. She heard how experiences in the early years of life can have a significant effect on lifelong outcomes. Duchess sat down with a group of people involved with and supported by Social Bite and discussed many issues caused by family breakdowns that can impact someone from childhood through their adult life. She talked about the benefits and hard work of the organization.
As known for her culinary habit and skills, Duchess tried her hand at the Café’s kitchen making a chicken wrap. From Telegraph’s reports,
Talking to the Social Bite co-founder Alice Thompson, Catherine asked, “Have you found examples of how an individual’s childhood has affected them, leading them to where they are now? You obviously see a lot of issues close up, people who come into the cafe to perhaps reach out and you help them. It’s a really big thing to be able to do that and understand everyone’s story and the journey they are on.”
Ms Thompson said, “Oh absolutely, it’s such a massive factor in what we see in our work and we see so many of the same patterns emerging all the time.”
Before leaving, Catherine stood for a group photograph.
Thanking everyone who has participated in the survey, Duchess of Cambridge shared a message today,
What has struck me most is that so often the challenges people face in later life, whether mental health, homelessness or family breakdown — can so often be traced back to experiences in their earliest years. It prompted me to delve deeper into the early year’s landscape and learn more from the experts, the scientists and the amazing people providing services on the ground. But now is the time to get the views from everyone in society. I wanted to hear directly from people across the UK and it’s great to have been able to talk to people in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and across England about their experiences. I want to thank the 200,000 people who have filled it out because each and every response will help show us what society really thinks about raising the next generation. I am excited to hear from even more people before it closes on 21st February.
Now to What Duchess wore — Catherine supported two casual looks today.
For the visit to the farm, Duchess was wearing her Barbour Ladies Waxed ‘Defence’ Jacket.

Tonight, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the EE British Academy Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall. The Duke, President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). The BAFTA event has become somewhat of a regular glamorous event in the couple’s royal calendar.
2020 marks The Duke’s tenth year as President of BAFTA. Ahead of the award ceremony, Palace said,
“BAFTA is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. While BAFTA is well-known for celebrating excellence and championing creativity through its awards, it is a charity committed to identifying talented individuals and making sure they receive the encouragement, professional support and advice that will enable them to succeed, regardless of their background or other circumstances.
In January 2020, The Duke attended a meeting with commissioning editors from across the broadcast industry to discuss the environment, the impact it will have on the programmes they create, and the way in which TV and programming can have a positive impact on repairing the planet.”
BAFTA has a year-round learning and new talent programme, including a campaign to support young people from all backgrounds entering the film, games and television industries, which the Duke helped relaunch in 2013, and a scholarships programme, which features the ‘Prince William Scholarships in Film, Games and Television’.
BAFTA’s relationship with Royal Family dates back to the 1950s. The Duke of Edinburgh was the organisation’s first president in 1959, a year after The Society of Film and Television Arts was formed. The Queen decided to gift the royalties from Richard Cawston’s documentary Royal Family to the SFTA in the early 1970s, enabling the organisation to take up residence at 195 Piccadilly.
Ahead of the awards, Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said: “We are so pleased The Duke and Duchess will join us to celebrate another outstanding year in film. This year marks The Duke’s 10th year as BAFTA’s President and his involvement has been invaluable to the work we do, from launching our global new talent activity in 2011 to supporting the BAFTA Scholarships programme and assisting with the most far-reaching fundraising campaign BAFTA has ever undertaken. We are immensely grateful to Their Royal Highnesses for their continued support and we look forward to welcoming them to the Film Awards on Sunday 2 February.”
The royal couple took a seat in the front row of the Royal Albert Hall to enjoy the night.
The BAFTA award trophy is a mask designed by American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe. When the Guild merged with the British Film Academy it became the Society of Film and Television Arts that later on was renamed as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The very first BAFTA mask, cast in bronze, was awarded in 1976 to Sir Charlie Chaplin n his Academy Fellowship that year. Since then, it has become one of the most recognizable and distinctive awards in the film and television industry and cemented its role as the UK’s equivalent of an Oscar.
The Duke of Cambridge presented the Fellowship award. The Fellowship is awarded annually at the ceremony and is the highest accolade bestowed by the Academy to an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television. The recipient of this year’s Fellowship will be film producer Kathleen Kennedy.
The American film producer started her career working on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and most recently has worked on the Star Wars series.
Speaking at the event, Prince William raised the issue of lack of diversity in the nomination. From Daily Mail’s report,

Coming to sartorial details of the night — first a look back at What Duchess wore at BAFTA in her previous appearances. Tonight Duchess of Cambridge is making her 5th appearance at the star-studded night.
She first attended in 2011 during North America tour in Los Angeles. The couple attended the event as part of their Royal tour in California, showing their support of British creative talent and BAFTA’s year-round work. For her first appearance, the then newly married Duchess of Cambridge wore Alexander McQueen lilac Gown.
She then joined Duke of Cambridge in 2017 after 6 years of anticipation. At her BAFTA come back, Duchess of Cambridge chose a vintage-looking Alexander McQueen Black Gown.
In 2018 the almost 8 months pregnant Catherine dazzled in simple yet stunning Jenny Packham Green Gown.
2019 was one of her most dazzling appearances. Duchess wore Alexander McQueen Off Shoulder Gown. This year BAFTA set a dress code for its attendees. In order to lessen their carbon footprint and promote sustainability, the BAFTA has asked attendees to re-wear an outfit they’ve worn in the past or to choose another sustainable option like rent or wear vintage. From People’s report,
So Duchess of Cambridge chose to bring back her Alexander McQueen Gown.
We saw the Sarah Burton designed gown in September 2012 when she attended a reception in Malaysia during South East Asia Diamond Jubilee Tour. The floor-length cream gown has an overleaf of sheer material with embroidered Malaysian flower gold hibiscuses — the official flower of Malaysia.
Duchess had some work done on the gown. Originally the bespoke gown featured a sweetheart neckline, sheer sleeves, fitted bodice with a full skirt. Today the gown has different sleeves and structured shoulders.
The gown was definitely a regal surprise for royal fans. Since the moment we find out it is going to be a re-wear, we all were rooting for Alexander McQueen Velvet Gown.
To be honest, the gown did not even cross my mind as a choice. I absolutely dislike its bodice, but watching the gown in movement is actually regal. Catherine stood out among the Hollywood celebs with its elegant golden touch. So overall it was a win-win look.
Duchess paired the gown with gold Jimmy Choo Pumps. Thanks to Gabi on Twitter for the id.
Catherine debuted a new pair of jewellery today. She wore Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra 6 motifs necklace. Thanks to Replicate Royalty on Twitter for the id. Inspired by the clover leaf, their asymmetric designs feature different associations of materials.” The necklace has 16.8 inches long chain and features 6 pieces of Mother-of-Pearl motifs.
Duchess teamed up the necklace with matching Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra Earrings. The €6300 earrings are described as, “In the 2006 Magic Alhambra® collection, Alhambra motifs of different sizes and material combinations dance a happy round. Their slightly asymmetrical design was inspired by a four-leaf clover.” The earrings feature 2 white Mother-of-Pearl motifs set in yellow gold.

The findings will be a vital source of information for the Early Years sector, helping it to better understand public perceptions of the importance of the early years, and the first-hand experiences of parents, families and carers. In the kitchen, Kate chatted to trainee pre-school chefs Luke Nelson-Neil and Rouchelle Scott-Ashby. When they started discussing particular foods, Mr Nelson-Neil joked about beetroot, saying: ‘I still can’t get them to eat it.’

There’s a raft of research that shows if you invest in them when they’re little if you give them the right kind of nurture if you give them the time to speak, learn, listen and concentrate — and opportunities of personal development — then they actually grow into really capable, successful human beings.“
